Torrevieja – basic information. Location, temperature and how to get there
Did you know that Torrevieja is one of the most important European producers of salt? This is due to its location. The city is located in Valencia, in the south-east of Spain. The popular destination on the Costa Blanca has direct access to the Mediterranean Sea and the pink salt lake Laguna Rosa.
Torrevieja is very well connected. The city is located between two airports: one in Alicante and the other in Murcia. You can get there by rental car, taxi or public transport.
If you like sunny weather, Torrevieja is one of the best places for a holiday or retirement far from the cold. You can count on more than 320 sunny days a year. The average temperature ranges from 6°C (but only at night) to 29°C. However, in summer, mainly in July and August, you can expect hot weather and temperatures above 30°C. On the other hand, winters are mild, with daytime temperatures staying at 16-17°C. Thanks to this, if you plan to stay in Torrevieja during this period, you can leave your winter coat at home.
History of Torrevieja
Torrevieja was once a fishing village where salt was extracted. Its name, which literally means ‘old tower’, comes from the watchtower, which until 1802 was the only major building there. Only then did the infrastructure begin to develop. However, in the 19th century, the town was completely destroyed by an earthquake. The disaster destroyed most of the buildings, but the tower survived and is still one of the most important tourist attractions in Torrevieja.
What is there to see in Torrevieja?
A must-see during your stay in Torrevieja? The pink lake. Laguna Rosa is part of the Parque natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja. It is not only the colour of the lake that is unique, but also the mineral salts and microorganisms in the water. In the park, you can also admire thousands of flamingos. The best time to see the birds is during their breeding season, which is between March and July.
Furthermore, it is worth setting off on a journey through the city to discover local and historical gems. These include the church Iglesia de La Inmaculada Concepcion, the Bella Lola monument by the coast and the breakwater Dique de Levante, which is over 3 km long!
If you have a car, you should plan a trip out of town. Although the place in question is about 130 km away, you can stop off on the way, for example, in Benidorm, which is located north of Torrevieja. The waterfalls of Las Fuentes del Algar are a recommended destination and a picturesque place where you can spend the whole day. In the resort, you will find a swimming pool and restaurants, as well as a rock ideal for diving into the spring water. Admission costs only 10 euros.
What attractions are there in Torrevieja?
Torrevieja offers attractions for both children and adults. For entertainment lovers, there is the Flamingo Water Park with swimming pools and slides. A similar place is Aquapolis, which is the 3rd largest facility of its kind on the Costa Blanca. Adults should visit the Museo Del Mar Y De La Sal, where they can learn about the history of the city, as well as the floating museum Museo Flotante Submarino Delfín S-61 with historic ships. If you like spending time on the water, take one of the cruises or a trip to the nearby island of Tabarca.

Transport between Torrevieja and Alicante
How do I get to Torrevieja? Alicante is the most popular airport, located about 40 km away. Once you arrive, you can rent a car, which will take you to the heart of the Costa Blanca in 40-45 minutes, preferably via the N-332. Another way to travel between Torrevieja and Alicante is by public transport.
There is a bus service called Costa Azul that runs between Torrevieja and Alicante, stopping at places such as the Estación de Autobuses de Torrevieja and the Estación de Autobuses Nueva. The journey takes about 1.5 hours and the average ticket costs 9 euros. Please note that the bus does not run at night!
Real estate in Torrevieja – where is it worth buying?
The Spanish property market is booming, and Torrevieja is one of the most popular choices. Where is it worth buying a flat or a house? You can opt for an apartment in the city centre, which will give you access to the most important infrastructure. Properties near Playa del Cura, which come from the primary market, are very popular.
